Did You Know...

You can recycle smoke detectors? You may be thinking, "sure, why not?" but be honest, if you for some reason had to get rid of one, where would it go? If you're like me, it would probably just get tossed. Recycling may or may not cross your mind, but again, if you're like me, you would decide against it, because you're not sure how to go about getting it recycled and you're too lazy to call your Waste Management office, only to be put on hold for an obsecene amount of time.

Where am I going with all this? I found a really cool website that I just had to share with you! Earth911.org has, among other cool things, a search engine where you can find recycling centers near you for just about anything you can imagine. If you can put it in your curbside bin for pickup, it will tell you. If there's a special place you need to bring it, it'll tell you that, too. Cool, huh? I plan on visiting often.

You're welcome! :)

Here's a cute video I took of Sophie and Morgan a few weeks ago. I've tried to post it several times, but either blogger or YouTube would not cooperate.

Morgan absolutely loves her sister! She's not really a sweet kitty, except when it comes to Sophie. She tries to rub all over her and cuddle with her, and usually Sophie wants nothing to do with it, but she'll tolerate it - at least for a little while. Listen towards the end, and you can hear Morgan purring - not the most pretty purr, but I still think it's cute.

They Grow Up So Fast...

Morgan is about a year old now, and I just can't believe it! She is so big - bigger than her older sister! Morgan is long and lanky, while Brooklyn is more compact and rounded. We've been through many bottle-feedings, and clean-ups with her, along with the adventure of litter-box training, moving, and a heart murmur, which thankfully closed on its own. Here's a trip down memory lane; don't mind me if I dab at my eyes a little with a tissue:

If you compare this picture with the one before it, you can see how she still has those adorable little spots on her belly, but now she's lost the bare-belly kitten look and replaced it with FAT! :)

This is probably my favorite picture of her. When she was a kitten she could sleep through anything, so I got a lot of good sleepy-baby pictures.

Now I tend to get more silly pictures from her!

I can just hear her in this picture: "Do a little dance...make a little love..."

Suddenly shy!

Morgan loves playing with her daddy!

And daddy loves playing with her!

"Attaaack!"

For more trips down memory lane, you can see Morgan along with her brother and sister here, see Sophie's devotion to her charges here, and see her cuteness at about 3 months here. Enjoy!

It May Not Look Like Much...

but it will. This is my porch, and I've been doing lots of planting. So far I've planted: lettuce, carrots, peppers, 2 orange trees (in pots), Patio Princess tomatoes, dill, black-eyed susans, zinnias, mint, and lots more. Some pictures for your viewing pleasure:

the Page orange I just transplanted to a larger, self-watering pot. Our salesman got us two trees, and this one is blooming like crazy.

This is Carl, my very first Orchid, who has grown a LOT since I got him a year ago. He just got a new pot, and I believe he is a Phalenopsis.

Some dill. I first tried dill a few months ago in my greenhouse window and had no luck at all. This time around, living on the porch has down wonders for me. Anyone want some dill?
No? How about some chives, then? I have both coming out of my ears!

My tomatoes in the background, and mint in the foreground. The mint is growing back nicely after I stripped it for the mint ice cream I made.

Peppers. Another plant that failed on my first attempt.

Lettuce! This is one of the most exciting plants for me to watch grow. I can't wait to have my first salad...

An Epidendrum Radicans from Dee. Bosephus just loves being on the porch!

The bird feeder in the front yard. Notice the morning glory and moonflower sprouts, which will eventually grow up the feeder and bloom pretty flowers. Do not notice Sophie loitering in the background.

I'll do my best to keep you updated on my progress! I'm really enjoying watching things grow.

Cypress Gardens and a Fun Weekend

Mike and I went to Lakeland for the weekend to visit some dear friends of ours, Doug and Colette. You may or may not remember Doug as the best man in our wedding. We went to Cypress Gardens on Saturday, which I had not been to in many years. For those of you not from the area, Cypress Gardens is a theme park with a mixture of rides, gardens and shows. They have the world's longest-running entertainment show, a waterskiiing show.

The famous pyramid. It was really windy and choppy that day, the kind of day that makes me glad I'm not a professional skiier!

Pretty waterfall.

This is a coatamundi, which I remember seeing when I went to Costa Rica. They are related to the racoons we have here, and I love their cute little faces. I know, I know, dad, they're pests, but they're so darn cute!!

This watersnake was giving Doug the stinkeye :)

Fake screaming before the ride began.

Screaming for real!

Bird's eye view from the ferris wheel.

Doug and Colette riding the teacups. I love this picture of Colette because it really shows her personality.

The three giants with shrimpy Colette standing on her toes :)

.....awwwwww......

We brought Sophie along, and she decided she has a new favorite person. Colette gave her lots of love...since she's usually so neglected, haha.

And finally, my new favorite picture of Sophie.

We really enjoyed this weekend, catching up and goofing off with old friends!

Eye Candy Friday

This sticker was on a bag that came in the box my laptop arrived in. All I can say is, wow. The fact that they need to tell people NOT to use the bag in CRIBS really scares me.

I must say, though, I did tie a knot in the bag before I threw it away (and I even re-used it before I did that!), which I probably would not have thought to do.

A Fun Day

My youngest cousin and aunt are visiting from North Carolina. Today we went to lunch at the the Yalaha Bakery, to the produce stand next to the bakery, then to our processing site to see where Mike and my dad work. Jesse is six now (he was born the day after 9/11!) and is turning into a really cool kid.

He grabbed my camera and started taking some pictures, and some of them were pretty impressive! Look how he used the tree branches to frame this one:

He loved being able to see the pictures he took on my digital camera. He took the first picture, and I told him to try to take another one without the chairs in the bottom right corner. He tried again, and the result was the next picture! Well, he cut out the chairs on the right...

He was so excited to have Mike show him the alligators at the site.

Cuteness.
